# TikTok Caption Character Limit (2026)

TikTok's help center doesn't state a character limit for the caption (the description under a post). The only official numbers are in TikTok's developer documentation. A video caption posted through TikTok's Content Posting API can be up to **2,200 characters** ([TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/content-posting-api-reference-direct-post)). A photo post can have a **90-character title** and a **4,000-character description** ([TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/content-posting-api-reference-photo-post)). Third-party guides disagree about the app itself: Hootsuite says 4,000 characters ([Hootsuite](https://blog.hootsuite.com/tiktok-captions/)), while Sprout Social says 2,200 ([Sprout Social](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/tiktok-captions/)). If you want a caption that works everywhere, including scheduling tools that post through the API, keep video captions under 2,200 characters and put the important part in the first line.

## "Caption" means two things on TikTok

People use "TikTok caption" for two different things:

- **The text under your post.** The TikTok app calls this field the description ([TikTok Support](https://support.tiktok.com/en/using-tiktok/creating-videos/making-a-post)), and TikTok's developer docs call it the video caption. This post is about its length.
- **On-screen captions** of what's said in the video. TikTok creates these with auto-generated captions and creator captions. See [how to add captions to TikTok](https://exemplary.ai/blog/add-captions-to-tiktok).

## TikTok text limits we could verify

| Text | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Video caption posted through the API | 2,200 characters (UTF-16) | [TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/content-posting-api-reference-direct-post) |
| Photo post title posted through the API | 90 characters (UTF-16) | [TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/content-posting-api-reference-photo-post) |
| Photo post description posted through the API | 4,000 characters (UTF-16) | [TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/content-posting-api-reference-photo-post) |
| Alt text for each photo in a photo post | 300 characters | [TikTok Support](https://support.tiktok.com/en/using-tiktok/creating-videos/accessibility) |
| Video description typed in the TikTok app | Not published by TikTok. Hootsuite says 4,000; Sprout Social says 2,200 | [Hootsuite](https://blog.hootsuite.com/tiktok-captions/), [Sprout Social](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/tiktok-captions/) |

We left out limits for bios, comments and usernames. We couldn't confirm them on a TikTok page.

## Why the numbers disagree

The 2,200 figure is TikTok's documented limit for video captions sent through its API. That's the route scheduling tools and other apps use to publish for you. The 4,000 figure matches TikTok's documented limit for photo descriptions, and Hootsuite reports it for captions generally. TikTok's help center doesn't settle the question for videos posted in the app, and the two guides were written more than a year apart (Hootsuite updated in February 2025, Sprout Social published in May 2026). Limits also change.

So check it yourself: paste the full caption into the description box on the post screen and make sure the end of it is still there before you post.

## What counts toward the limit

- **Hashtags and @mentions.** They're part of the caption text. TikTok's API docs say hashtags and mentions inside the caption are recognized as such, which means they're counted within it ([TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/content-posting-api-reference-direct-post)).
- **Spaces and line breaks.** They're characters like any other.
- **Emoji can count as two.** TikTok's API measures length in UTF-16 units. In UTF-16, many emoji take two units, so a single 😄 counts as 2 ([MDN](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/String/length)). The same goes for some rarer scripts and symbols. Plain Latin letters count as one. A caption full of emoji can hit the API limit sooner than a character counter suggests.

## How long should a TikTok caption be?

The maximum isn't the goal. Viewers see only the start of the description before it's cut off. Sprout Social puts it at the first 100 to 150 characters before the "more" prompt ([Sprout Social](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/tiktok-captions/)). Write for that:

1. **Lead with the point.** The first line should say what the video is about or why to keep watching, in plain words.
2. **Add context after that.** Longer captions are useful for recipes, steps, sources or a summary for people watching on mute. Put that detail below the first line.
3. **Keep hashtags relevant and few.** A handful that describe the video beats a long block. See our [TikTok and Reels hashtag guide](https://exemplary.ai/blog/best-hashtag-tiktok-reels).
4. **Don't repeat the on-screen text word for word.** The description is a second chance to add something the video doesn't say.

## If you post through a scheduler

Tools that publish to TikTok for you go through TikTok's Content Posting API, so the documented 2,200-character limit for video captions is the one that applies. Before you schedule a long caption, check its length in a counter that measures UTF-16 (or allow for emoji counting double) and trim it to fit. Timing is covered in [the best time to post on TikTok](https://exemplary.ai/blog/best-tiktok-times).

## FAQ

### What is the TikTok caption character limit?

TikTok doesn't publish one for captions typed in the app. Its developer docs set 2,200 characters for video captions posted through its API and 4,000 for photo post descriptions. For the app, Hootsuite reports 4,000 and Sprout Social reports 2,200. Staying under 2,200 works in every case.

### Do hashtags count toward the TikTok character limit?

Yes. Hashtags and @mentions are part of the caption text, so every character of them counts.

### Do emojis count as one character?

Not always. TikTok's API counts UTF-16 units, and many emoji use two of them. Plain letters count as one.

### What's the character limit for TikTok photo posts?

Through TikTok's API, a photo post can have a title of up to 90 characters and a description of up to 4,000. Alt text for each photo can be up to 300 characters.

### Is the caption the same as TikTok's on-screen captions?

No. The caption (description) is the text under your post. On-screen captions are the transcript of what's said, added with TikTok's auto-generated or creator captions or burned into the video. See [how to add captions to TikTok](https://exemplary.ai/blog/add-captions-to-tiktok).
