# YouTube's AI Editor for Shorts: What It Does and When It's Due

YouTube's AI editor for Shorts is a conversational editing assistant: you describe the edit you want in a chat, it builds a first draft from your footage, and it suggests changes such as reordering frames, trimming pauses and syncing music to the beat. YouTube announced it at Made on YouTube on September 23, 2026, for both Shorts and the YouTube Create app ([YouTube Blog](https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/made-on-youtube-new-tools-power-creation-journey/)). It isn't available yet. YouTube's own post gives no launch date; TechCrunch reports it's due "in early 2027" ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/23/youtubes-conversational-video-editing-tool-lets-creators-make-edits-in-natural-language/)). Until then, the closest options are the AI first-draft tool in YouTube Create, YouTube Studio's Clips and Shorts tool for long videos you've already uploaded, and third-party AI clippers.

## What YouTube announced

The announcement came from Aparna Pappu, a VP at YouTube, in a post about new creator tools. YouTube says it is "integrating Gemini into a new conversational editing assistant for both Shorts and the YouTube Create app" ([YouTube Blog](https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/made-on-youtube-new-tools-power-creation-journey/)). Here's what it's supposed to do, from YouTube's posts:

- **Draft from a prompt.** "Start with suggested prompts or your own for a first draft."
- **Suggest edits as you chat.** "Continue chatting and get personalized suggestions to reorder frames, trim and sync music to the beat, and more."
- **Clean up pacing.** YouTube's event summary says you can "choose from personalized suggestions to automatically trim pauses, reorder for better pacing and more" ([YouTube Blog](https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/innovation-youtube-era-made-on-viewers-creators/)).
- **Hand back control at any point.** "You can bounce back and forth between this creative partner and manually editing your timeline, making iterative tweaks until your video is perfect."

TechCrunch saw a demo in which a creator shared footage of herself dancing in different outfits, asked the AI to pick the best take for each outfit, then had it add music and transitions. It reports the assistant can also add text overlays and remove pauses in speech ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/23/youtubes-conversational-video-editing-tool-lets-creators-make-edits-in-natural-language/)).

It builds on Gemini Omni, which YouTube brought into Shorts Remix and the YouTube Create app in May 2026 ([YouTube Blog](https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/youtube-news-google-io-2026/)). YouTube says "hundreds of thousands of channels" used Gemini Omni in Shorts and Create every day in August 2026.

## When it launches, and what's still unknown

| Question | What's confirmed |
|---|---|
| Is it available now? | No. It was announced on September 23, 2026. |
| When will it launch? | TechCrunch reports "early 2027." YouTube's blog posts don't give a date. |
| Where will it work? | In Shorts and the YouTube Create app. |
| Which countries and languages? | Not announced. YouTube Create itself is "available in select markets" ([YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/creators/create/youtube-create-app/)). |
| Will it cost anything? | Not announced. |
| Can it cut Shorts from a long video? | Not announced. It's described as editing the footage you give it. |

Treat anything beyond the table as speculation until YouTube publishes a Help Center page for it.

## What to use until it arrives

### 1. YouTube Create's AI first draft

YouTube Create is YouTube's free editing app for Android and iOS. Its AI edit tool will "automatically trim and arrange your video clips into a first draft," and the app also offers automatic captions, background-noise removal and a library of royalty-free songs and sound effects ([YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/creators/create/youtube-create-app/)). It's the nearest thing to the coming assistant, minus the chat.

### 2. Edit with AI in the Shorts camera

YouTube began testing Edit with AI in September 2025. It turns camera-roll footage into a first draft by finding and arranging your best moments and adding music, transitions and a voiceover that reacts to the video, in English or Hindi. YouTube said at the time that it would expand to "select markets" ([YouTube Blog](https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/generative-ai-creation-tools-made-on-youtube-2025/)). If you don't see it in your app, it hasn't reached your account.

### 3. YouTube Studio's Clips and Shorts tool

If your raw material is a long video already on your channel, open it in YouTube Studio and choose **Clips and Shorts**. You can pick a segment by selecting its transcript text or use AI-suggested segments, and Studio adds auto-captions where available. AI suggestions are limited to select countries (including the US, UK, India and Brazil) and languages (English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish) ([YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/15824265)). Our guide to [turning long videos into Shorts](https://exemplary.ai/blog/turn-long-videos-into-shorts) walks through it.

### 4. The Shorts editor itself

The built-in editor already handles the basics by hand: add a sound, on-screen text, a voiceover, and adjust text timing on the timeline ([YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/13380879?hl=en)).

### 5. Third-party AI editors and clippers

For long recordings, such as podcasts, interviews and webinars, AI clippers do a job the announced assistant doesn't claim to do: find the moments worth posting. Opus Clip, Vizard and our own [AI Clips](https://exemplary.ai/ai-clips) are examples. AI Clips transcribes a video of 10 minutes or more, suggests clips, reframes them to 9:16 and adds animated captions, and you trim each clip by editing its transcript. We compare the options in [the best AI tools for YouTube Shorts](https://exemplary.ai/blog/best-ai-tools-for-youtube-shorts), and [can AI edit videos for you?](https://exemplary.ai/blog/can-ai-edit-videos-for-you) covers the agent-style editors.

## How to get ready for YouTube's AI editor

- **Organize your takes.** From what YouTube and TechCrunch describe, the assistant works from footage you give it and picks between takes. Clearly shot, separate takes will give it more to work with.
- **Plan your hook.** YouTube also announced that Studio will let you "test up to three video cuts to see which hook performs best," marked "coming soon" ([YouTube Blog](https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/made-on-youtube-new-tools-power-creation-journey/)). An AI editor makes alternate cuts cheaper to produce. Our [video A/B testing guide](https://exemplary.ai/blog/youtube-ab-testing-video-cuts) explains how to prepare them.
- **Know the music rules.** Syncing to the beat only helps if the track can stay up. Songs from the Shorts Audio Library are limited in length, and a claimed Short over one minute can be blocked; see [Shorts music rules](https://exemplary.ai/blog/youtube-shorts-music-rules).
- **Check the result.** YouTube positions the assistant as a partner you can override, not an autopilot. Watch every draft through before you publish.

## FAQ

### Does YouTube have an AI video editor for Shorts?

Not a conversational one yet. YouTube announced a Gemini-powered conversational editing assistant for Shorts and the YouTube Create app on September 23, 2026, and TechCrunch reports it will arrive in early 2027. Today, YouTube Create's AI edit tool and Edit with AI (in select markets) make first drafts from your clips.

### What will YouTube's AI editor be able to do?

According to YouTube, build a first draft from suggested or custom prompts, then suggest edits such as reordering frames, trimming pauses and syncing music to the beat. TechCrunch adds picking the best take, adding transitions and text overlays. You can switch to manual timeline editing at any time.

### Will YouTube's AI editor be free?

YouTube hasn't said. The YouTube Create app is free, and YouTube rolled out Gemini Omni remixing in Shorts and Create at no cost, but no pricing has been announced for the conversational editor.

### Can YouTube's AI editor turn a long video into Shorts?

That isn't part of the announcement. To cut Shorts from a long video on your channel, use YouTube Studio's Clips and Shorts tool, or an AI clipping tool for recordings that aren't on YouTube.

### Is YouTube Create available on iPhone?

Yes. YouTube lists the app for Android and iOS, in select markets.
