What an SRT file is, and where to use it

An SRT (SubRip) file is plain text: numbered subtitles, each with a start and end time (with a comma before the milliseconds, as in 00:00:01,000) and one or two lines of text. It carries no styling, which is why so many platforms and editors can read it.

Upload it to YouTube Studio as a subtitle track, or import it into Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro or CapCut to style it there. Our guide on how to make an SRT file covers writing one by hand and checking it before you upload.

If a web player asks for VTT instead, the SRT to VTT converter switches the format in your browser. To show the subtitles in the picture rather than as a separate track, burn them into the video.
