Which format to use

YouTube accepts both SRT and VTT. A web player built on the HTML track element wants VTT. Most video editors (Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro) want SRT, and so do Facebook, LinkedIn and X when you add a caption file to a post.

Converting SRT to VTT keeps the text and timings. Going from VTT to SRT keeps them too, but drops positioning, styling and comments, since SRT has no place for them. SRT vs VTT compares the two formats in detail.

How do I convert SRT to VTT?

Can I convert VTT to SRT too?

What is the difference between SRT and VTT files?

SRT numbers each cue, writes milliseconds after a comma, and has no header or styling. VTT (WebVTT) starts with a WEBVTT header, writes milliseconds after a dot, and can carry cue settings for position and alignment, comments and styling. The text and timings are the same in both.

Does renaming an .srt file to .vtt work?

Not reliably. A VTT file has to start with the WEBVTT header, and its timestamps use dots, so a renamed SRT file is often rejected or plays with no captions. Convert it instead.

Does YouTube want SRT or VTT?

YouTube accepts both. SRT is the simpler choice; VTT also carries positioning, which YouTube supports.

How do I get an SRT or VTT file if I only have the video?
