Standard Arabic and the dialects

News and sermons are often in Modern Standard Arabic, while everyday speech is Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf or Maghrebi Arabic, which differ from each other in words and sounds. How well a recording transcribes depends on the dialect and the audio, so try a short clip of a long recording first.

Arabic script runs right to left, and the English subtitle files read left to right as plain English text, so they drop into any English editor or player without layout trouble.

Names, numerals and religious terms

Arabic names have many English spellings (Mohammed, Muhammad, Mohamed) and often carry the article al-. Pick the spelling a person uses and keep it. Religious and cultural terms may be clearer left in Arabic with a short gloss than translated outright.

Some regions write Eastern Arabic numerals (٣ for 3), others Western digits. Check every figure in the English. For the Arabic text itself, see Arabic transcription and Arabic subtitles.

What it does

Arabic In, English Out

The Arabic transcript comes first, so you check it before it becomes English.

Both languages, line by line

Each English line sits under its Arabic line, with the same timestamp.

English subtitles on the video

Show English as subtitles plays the translation over the recording before you download it.

Sermons into English

A khutbah or lecture becomes English subtitles for the video and an English transcript for the community newsletter.

Dialect check first

Test a short clip of a dialect recording and read the Arabic transcript before translating the whole thing.

Questions

Common questions

How do I translate Arabic audio to English for free?
On the Free plan (500 one-time credits; files up to 500 MB and 30 min long; 720p video exports with a watermark): upload the Arabic recording or paste its link, translate the transcript into English in the Translations panel, and download it.
Does it dub Arabic audio into English?
No. You get English text: a transcript and subtitles for the Arabic recording, with no synthetic voice.
Do Arabic dialects translate as well as Modern Standard Arabic?
The transcript follows what is said, and how well it reads depends on the recording: dialect, background noise and people talking over each other all matter. Check the Arabic transcript on a short clip before you translate a long recording.
Do Arabic numerals like ٣ come out right in the English?
Check them. Eastern Arabic numerals (٣) and Western digits (3) are both in use, and a figure is worth comparing between the Arabic transcript and the English before you publish.
How should Arabic names like Mohammed be spelled in English?
There is no single standard: Mohammed, Muhammad and Mohamed are all common. Use the spelling the person uses publicly and keep it the same throughout the subtitles.
