Characters, tones and same-sounding names

Written Chinese has no spaces and many characters share a sound, told apart in speech by tone and context. Names suffer most: two people with names that sound alike can be written with different characters, so check every name in the Chinese transcript.

Mainland China and Singapore write simplified characters, Taiwan and Hong Kong write traditional ones, and vocabulary differs between them as well. That matters for the Chinese text; the English reads the same either way.

Large numbers and forms of address

Chinese counts in 万 (ten thousand) and 亿 (a hundred million), so 5万 is 50,000 and 3亿 is 300 million. In business calls and lectures, these are the figures to check in the English before you share it.

The polite 您 and the everyday 你 are both "you" in English, and titles such as 老师 (teacher) are used far more widely than the English word. For the Chinese text itself, see Chinese transcription and Chinese subtitles.

What it does

Chinese In, English Out

The Chinese transcript comes first, so you check it before it becomes English.

Both languages, line by line

Each English line sits under its Chinese line, with the same timestamp.

English subtitles on the video

Show English as subtitles plays the translation over the recording before you download it.

Figures you can trust

Read the 万 and 亿 amounts in the English against the Chinese transcript before you send a call summary or a lecture recap.

Videos from any site

Links work from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Vimeo or X; for a video from another Chinese platform, download it and upload the file.

Questions

Common questions

How do I translate Chinese audio to English for free?
On the Free plan (500 one-time credits; files up to 500 MB and 30 min long; 720p video exports with a watermark): upload the Chinese recording or paste its link, translate the transcript into English in the Translations panel, and download it.
Does it dub Chinese audio into English?
No. You get English text: a transcript and subtitles for the Chinese recording, with no synthetic voice.
Does it translate Mandarin or Cantonese?
The language list names it Chinese, without separate Mandarin and Cantonese options. If your recording is in Cantonese, test a short clip first and check the transcript before you rely on the English.
How should I check large Chinese numbers like 万 and 亿?
万 is ten thousand and 亿 is a hundred million, so 3万 is 30,000. Compare every figure in the English with the Chinese transcript, since a misplaced unit changes the amount by a factor of ten thousand.
Can I translate a Chinese video from a site that is not YouTube?
Paste a link if the video is on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Vimeo or X. For any other site, download the video and upload the file; the translation works the same way.
