France, Quebec and everywhere between

Quebec French has its own words, such as courriel for email and char for car, and its own pronunciation; Belgians and Swiss say septante and nonante where the French say soixante-dix and quatre-vingt-dix. There is no setting for any of it; read the French transcript for regional words before you translate.

Spoken French runs words together through liaison and elision, so it helps that the transcript is written French: you check the written words, and the English follows from them.

Tu, vous and the numbers

French separates the familiar tu from the polite vous, and English has one "you". In an interview the shift from vous to tu can mean something; if it matters to your story, mention it in your English text.

French writes decimals with a comma and groups thousands with a space, so 2,5 is two and a half and 10 000 is ten thousand. Check figures in the English, and see French transcription for the French text itself.

What it does

French In, English Out

The French transcript comes first, so you check it before it becomes English.

Both languages, line by line

Each English line sits under its French line, with the same timestamp.

English subtitles on the video

Show English as subtitles plays the translation over the recording before you download it.

Quebec to Dakar

One French option covers speakers from Canada, Europe and Africa; regional words are the part to read before translating.

Speaker names in the export

Set who is speaking in the French transcript and the English subtitle file can carry the names into your editor.

Questions

Common questions

How do I translate French audio to English for free?
On the Free plan (500 one-time credits; files up to 500 MB and 30 min long; 720p video exports with a watermark): upload the French recording or paste its link, translate the transcript into English in the Translations panel, and download it.
Does it dub French audio into English?
No. You get English text: a transcript and subtitles for the French recording, with no synthetic voice.
Can I get English subtitles for a French interview?
Yes. Transcribe the interview in French, translate it into English, and download the English as an SRT or VTT file for your video editor or player. Speaker names you set in the transcript can go into the download too.
Does it handle Quebec French as well as French from France?
There is one French option for every region, with no separate setting for Quebec. Vocabulary differs, so check regional words in the French transcript before you translate.
Will the switch between tu and vous show in the English?
Not as a word: English uses "you" for both. The meaning carries over, and if the change of tone matters, note it in your English copy.
