One language, many countries

Spanish from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, Argentina and the US share a grammar but not a vocabulary: a car is a carro in Mexico and a coche in Madrid, and a computer is a computadora or an ordenador. Speakers in Spain also say vosotros where Latin Americans say ustedes. None of that needs a setting; it does mean regional words and slang are the first thing to read in the transcript.

In the US, Spanish speech often switches into English mid-sentence. The transcript keeps the words as they were said, so an English phrase stays English, and the translation carries the Spanish around it into English.

Tú, usted and the numbers

English has one "you", Spanish has tú and usted. The difference between talking to a friend and addressing a customer shows in tone rather than in a word, so if formality matters, for a quote in an article for example, add a note to your English copy.

Most Spanish-speaking countries write decimals with a comma and thousands with a point, so 3,5 means three and a half and 1.000 means a thousand; Mexico and the US use the English style. Read prices and figures in the Spanish transcript before you translate. For the Spanish transcript on its own, see Spanish transcription.

What it does

Spanish In, English Out

The Spanish transcript comes first, so you check it before it becomes English.

Both languages, line by line

Each English line sits under its Spanish line, with the same timestamp.

English subtitles on the video

Show English as subtitles plays the translation over the recording before you download it.

Spanglish stays readable

English words a speaker drops into Spanish stay as spoken in the transcript, so the English version reads naturally.

Regional words, checked first

Read the Spanish transcript for local words and names before translating, and the English follows from a clean source.

Questions

Common questions

How do I translate Spanish audio to English for free?
On the Free plan (500 one-time credits; files up to 500 MB and 30 min long; 720p video exports with a watermark): upload the Spanish recording or paste its link, translate the transcript into English in the Translations panel, and download it.
Does it dub Spanish audio into English?
No. You get English text: a transcript and subtitles for the Spanish recording, with no synthetic voice.
Does it work for Spanish from Mexico, Spain and Latin America?
It transcribes Spanish as it is spoken, whichever country the speaker is from; there is no separate setting per country. Check the Spanish transcript for names and local words before you translate, since the English follows it.
Will the English show the difference between tú and usted?
Not as a word, because English uses "you" for both. The translation carries the meaning; if the level of formality matters for how you use the quote, note it yourself in the English.
What happens to Spanglish in a Spanish recording?
The transcript keeps the mix of Spanish and English as it was spoken, and the translation renders the Spanish parts in English around the words that were already English.
