What is agent orchestration?
Agent orchestration coordinates several AI steps or agents: who handles each part, what information moves between them and how the results become one usable output.

The key idea
The value comes from clear handoffs and checks, not from adding more agents.

Find renewal dates and notice periods.
Collect duties and payment terms.
Flag terms that need a closer look.
Include missing information and disagreements.

Divide the work
A coordinator assigns separate questions: what are the dates, the obligations and the unusual terms?
- 02
Keep the evidence
Each task returns its findings with the source and any missing information, rather than an unexplained verdict.
- 03
Combine and review
The coordinator brings the results together and makes disagreements or incomplete work visible.
What is being coordinated?
Orchestration covers the order of work, the data passed between steps and the rules for completion. Some steps can happen at the same time. Others must wait: a document has to be classified before a task chooses the right extraction instructions.
A coordinator may follow a fixed workflow or ask a model to decide which subtasks are needed. Anthropic describes an orchestrator–workers pattern in which a central model delegates and combines results. That is one pattern, not a requirement for every AI application.

Why the handoff matters
Imagine one step extracts a renewal date and another drafts a reminder. If the first step returns an uncertain date as a fact, the second can produce a polished but misleading reminder. A useful handoff includes the value, its source and whether it still needs review.
More agents also mean more places for a request to fail. A document search may succeed while a record lookup times out. The combined result should say which work finished and which did not. Repeating the whole workflow can be wasteful or unsafe if an earlier step already changed something. A smaller, well-defined workflow is often easier to inspect and operate.
An everyday example
A contract review with separate questions
One task identifies notice periods, another collects payment obligations and a third compares clauses with the team’s review instructions. A coordinator assembles the findings into a single brief.
The reviewer sees the source for each finding and an explicit list of unanswered questions. Agreement between agents is not treated as independent proof.
A common misconception
“More agents automatically mean a better answer.”
Agents can repeat the same mistake or pass an error along. Add a specialist step only when it contributes a useful capability or a check that the workflow otherwise lacks.
How Exemplary helps
One place to shape the workflow.
Exemplary lets teams bring models, knowledge and tools into their agent setup. We help translate a multi-step business task into clear responsibilities and review points; the exact workflow is configured for your use case.
