Slack integration

AI agents for Slack conversations and team updates

Turn accessible Slack channel messages into clear summaries, handoffs, and updates your team can review.

Connected actions

What your agent can do with Slack

Connect an ExemplaryAI agent to Slack to list public channels it can access, read available channel history, and send a message to a specified destination. Start with a focused request: understand a team conversation, identify unresolved questions, or prepare an operational update. Choose the channel and review the result against its source messages before sharing it.

Find accessible public channels

List the public channels available to the connection and select the correct destination. A similar channel name is a reason to confirm its identity before continuing.

Read channel history

Retrieve available messages from a specified channel. Use those messages to summarize decisions and open questions, while keeping gaps in the returned history visible.

Send a team update

Post a message to a specified conversation when the connection has permission. Agree on the destination and final text before asking the agent to send it.

Where it helps

Put Slack context to work

Prepare an incident handoff

Read the accessible incident channel and separate confirmed observations, attempted fixes, and unresolved questions. A shift lead can use the summary to check what the next team needs to investigate.

Collect questions from an operations channel

Summarize the questions visible in the retrieved messages. Distinguish a question that has an answer in those messages from one that needs follow-up, without assuming missing discussion never happened.

Publish a reviewed project update

Prepare a short update from the channel context and details supplied by the project owner. Review owners, dates, and wording, then explicitly request delivery to the selected channel.

Worked example

From channel messages to a handoff brief

Illustrative example, not a recorded product run. An operations lead wants a brief from an accessible public channel about a delayed export job.

  1. Identify the intended channel from the channels available to the connection.

  2. Read its available history and distinguish messages reporting observations from suggestions.

  3. Prepare the brief and state where the returned messages leave the outcome uncertain.

Illustrative output

Confirmed
The supplied example messages report a failed export and a retry attempt.
Unresolved
No confirmation that the retry completed appears in the messages reviewed.
Next decision
Ask the on-call owner to verify the job before publishing a recovery update.

Check the summary against Slack and confirm the channel before sending. A suggested review step is an operating procedure; it should not be mistaken for an automatically enforced approval gate.

Connection setup

Connect Slack to your agent

Start with a defined task, the account that should perform it, and the smallest set of actions it needs.

  1. Choose one channel and task

Start with an accessible public channel and a bounded summary or update request. Define what a useful answer should contain.

  2. Review the Slack app configuration

Configure a Slack OAuth app with the deployment's callback URL and client credentials. Review bot scopes for channel listing, history, and posting with your administrator, and confirm workspace installation policy.

  3. Confirm channel access

Check the app's channel membership and permission to read history. Test the selected destination separately before relying on message delivery.

  4. Run a small reviewable example

Compare a summary with the messages returned, then test an explicitly requested message in a suitable channel. Record limitations before expanding the task.

Access & deployment

Set the connection boundary

Connection
A reviewed Slack OAuth app configuration and authorization accepted by the workspace.
Reading
Review channels:read and channels:history for public-channel reading. Bot history access also requires membership in the channel; authorization alone does not expose every conversation.
Writing
Posting requires chat:write and access to the destination. Enable only the actions the agent needs, and confirm the channel before requesting delivery.

A bounded view of the conversation

Returned channel history is the evidence for a summary. This integration does not establish workspace-wide search, thread-reply retrieval, or automatic event triggers.

Provider limits still apply

Slack access rules, retention, and API limits can restrict available context. Treat missing or partial results as a gap to investigate.

Slack remains a cloud connection

Calls to Slack require permitted internet access. Running an agent on private infrastructure does not make this integration work inside a strict air gap.

Slack integration questions

Can this Slack AI agent read every channel?
No. Available actions operate within the connection's permissions and accessible channels. Do not assume authorization grants a complete view of the workspace.
Can it summarize a Slack thread?
Channel-history reading does not establish retrieval of every reply in a thread. Supply additional context when replies are essential, and check the summary's evidence.
Can the agent send the summary to Slack?
Yes, message sending is an available action when the connection can post to the destination. Review the content and explicitly request the send.
Does connecting Slack create continuous monitoring?
No continuous synchronization or event-triggered monitoring is established by these actions. Begin with explicit requests to read or send information.
