Best Hashtags for YouTube Shorts: 2026 Rules
YouTube's own hashtag rules for Shorts (60-tag cap, 3 shown by the title, #Shorts optional), a 5-step way to pick tags, and example sets by niche.

There is no single list of "best" YouTube Shorts hashtags. Nobody outside YouTube can see which tags drive views, and YouTube doesn't publish one. What does work: 3 to 5 specific hashtags that describe the Short's topic, placed in the title or description, with the most important one first. Stay far below YouTube's hard limit: if a video has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them. #Shorts is optional. YouTube classifies an upload as a Short by its length and shape, not by a hashtag. Below: the rules as YouTube documents them (checked September 2026), a five-step way to choose tags, and example sets by niche.
How YouTube hashtags work (per YouTube Help)
These come from YouTube's own hashtag help page, Shorts upload page and tags page, as of September 2026:
| Rule | What YouTube says |
|---|---|
| Where hashtags go | Type # in the title or description. YouTube suggests popular hashtags as you type. |
| What viewers see | Up to three hashtags "considered most engaging" appear by the title. |
| Clickable | Hashtags in the title and description link to a results page of other content using the same hashtag. |
| Over-tagging | More than 60 hashtags on one video and YouTube ignores every hashtag on it. |
| Prohibited | Spaces inside a hashtag, misleading or unrelated tags, harassment, hate speech, sexual content, vulgar language. Violations can lead to removal. |
| What makes a Short | Up to 3 minutes long, with a square or vertical aspect ratio. No hashtag required. |
| Hashtags vs tags | The separate "Tags" field "plays a minimal role" in discovery. Title, thumbnail and description matter more. |
Two things follow. First, hashtags are labels, not a ranking boost. They help YouTube and viewers see what the Short is about, and they add your Short to a hashtag results page. Second, the title and the first line of the description carry more weight than a pile of tags, so write those first.
Do you need #Shorts?
No. YouTube's upload help lists two criteria for a Short: up to 3 minutes, and a square or vertical aspect ratio (YouTube Help). Shorts up to 3 minutes have been allowed for uploads since October 15, 2024 (YouTube Help). #Shorts doesn't hurt, but it takes a slot that a topic hashtag could use. Almost every Short could carry it, so it says nothing about what your video covers.
A five-step method for choosing hashtags
- Name the topic in plain words. For example: "3-ingredient air fryer dessert." Your hashtags should come from this phrase, not from a generic list.
- Search it on YouTube. Type
#plus your main keyword in the title field and look at what YouTube suggests. Then open the hashtag's results page and check that the Shorts there are actually like yours. - Pick one broad, one or two specific, one audience or format tag. For example:
#airfryer(broad),#airfryerdessert(specific),#easyrecipes(audience). Specific tags have less competition and a more relevant results page. - Put the most important tag where it shows. YouTube chooses which hashtags appear by the title, but a hashtag in the title is visible and clickable either way. Use one there at most. Titles full of hashtags read like spam.
- Check results after 2 to 4 weeks. In YouTube Studio, open a Short's analytics and look at where its views came from. If nearly all of them came from the Shorts feed and almost none from search, your hashtags aren't doing much. Put more work into the hook and the topic.
Example hashtag sets by niche
These are examples to adapt, not a verified "top" list. They are plain topic words that describe common Shorts niches. Check each one on YouTube before using it, as described above.
| Niche | Example set |
|---|---|
| Cooking | #airfryer #easyrecipes #dessert |
| Fitness | #homeworkout #coreworkout #fitnesstips |
| Gaming | #minecraft #minecraftbuilds #gaming |
| Tech reviews | #smartphone #techreview #iphone |
| Beauty | #skincare #makeuptutorial #drugstoremakeup |
| Education | #learnenglish #grammar #studytips |
| Personal finance | #personalfinance #budgeting #investing101 |
| Travel | #japantravel #tokyo #travelguide |
| Pets | #goldenretriever #dogtraining #puppy |
| Podcast clips | #podcast #podcastclips plus the guest's or show's name |
| Comedy skits | #comedy #skit #relatable |
| DIY and home | #diy #homeimprovement #woodworking |
Notice the pattern: each set names the subject, a narrower version of it, and who it is for. That pattern matters more than the specific words.
Common mistakes
- Stuffing. 15 to 30 hashtags don't help. More than 60 and YouTube ignores them all. Even below that, YouTube's help page warns that the more tags you add, the less relevant they become.
- Irrelevant trending tags. A trending tag unrelated to your Short breaks YouTube's policy on misleading hashtags and can get the video removed.
- Copying another platform's tags.
#fypand#foryouare TikTok habits. They describe nothing about your content on YouTube. - Treating hashtags as the growth lever. The first two seconds, the topic and the title decide most of a Short's reach. Hashtags only label it.
Getting hashtags from your own video
If you cut Shorts from longer videos, the best hashtags are usually already in what you said. Exemplary AI (our product) can suggest hashtags based on your content with the hashtag generator, and the YouTube Shorts maker turns a long video into vertical clips with captions, titles and descriptions you can edit before posting.
Turn a long video into Shorts
Find the strongest moments, reframe to vertical, add captions and draft titles and hashtags you can edit.
FAQ
How many hashtags should I use on YouTube Shorts?
Use 3 to 5 relevant hashtags. YouTube shows up to three by the title and ignores every hashtag on a video that has more than 60, so extra tags add nothing and can backfire.
Where should I put hashtags on a YouTube Short?
Put them in the title or the description. Both are clickable and link to a hashtag results page. Most creators put one in the title and the rest at the end of the description.
Does #Shorts help a video get into the Shorts feed?
No. YouTube treats a video as a Short when it's up to 3 minutes long and square or vertical. #Shorts is optional.
Are hashtags the same as YouTube tags?
No. Hashtags go in the title or description and are visible and clickable. Tags go in a separate hidden field, and YouTube says they play a minimal role in discovery, mainly helping with commonly misspelled words.
Which hashtags are trending on YouTube right now?
Type # and a keyword in the title field when you upload, and YouTube suggests popular hashtags. Check a hashtag's results page before using it. A trending tag only helps if your Short matches it.
