Best AI tools for content creators

The best AI tools for content creators are the ones that cover a specific step of your workflow. For writing and ideas, use a general assistant: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, all with free plans. For design, Canva. For images, Midjourney. For voiceovers, ElevenLabs. For presenter-style videos without filming, Synthesia. For editing video by editing text, Descript. For proofreading, Grammarly. Most creators need two or three of these, not all of them. Plans and prices below were checked on each vendor's own site on September 25, 2026.

Disclosure: we make Exemplary AI, a repurposing tool. It's covered separately at the end, not ranked.

How we chose

We grouped tools by the job they do in a creator's workflow and picked one or two per job. We checked each vendor's own site for four things: the tool still exists under that name, it has a free tier or trial, its cheapest paid plan, and one thing it does better than the rest. Since the 2024 version of this list, we removed tools that have pivoted or that we couldn't verify (details at the end).

The tools by job

Writing and ideas: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini

ChatGPT

All three general assistants can outline, draft, rewrite and brainstorm, and all have free plans. The differences show up in limits and in how they fit your other tools:

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI's lowest-cost paid plan, Go, raises limits on messages, uploads and image creation compared with Free, and Plus and Pro add more. Prices vary by country, so see ChatGPT pricing. Image generation is built in, so you can draft a post and its graphic in one place.
  • Claude: Anthropic's Pro plan is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually. Max starts at $100 a month for 5x or 20x Pro's usage. Paid plans include the Opus, Sonnet and Haiku model families and add Projects for keeping reference material together (Claude pricing).
  • Gemini: Google's assistant has a free tier. Paid Google AI plans add more usage, image and video generation, and cloud storage. Prices vary by country, so see Gemini subscriptions.

Whichever you use, fact-check anything you publish. Assistants can state wrong facts confidently.

Design: Canva

Canva

Canva is a template-based design tool for social graphics, thumbnails, carousels and slide decks. It has Free, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. See Canva pricing for your region's price and for which AI features each plan includes.

Images: Midjourney

Midjourney

Midjourney is best known for stylized, art-directed images. It has four plans (Basic, Standard, Pro and Mega), and annual billing saves 20%. Unlimited "Relax mode" generations start on Standard, and Stealth mode, which keeps your images and videos private, is only on Pro and Mega (Midjourney plans).

Voiceovers: ElevenLabs

ElevenLabs does text-to-speech, voice cloning, dubbing and music. The free plan gives 10k credits a month but no commercial license. Starter costs $6 a month, includes a commercial license, and adds instant voice cloning (ElevenLabs pricing).

Presenter videos without a camera: Synthesia

Synthesia

Synthesia turns a script into a video presented by an AI avatar, in 160+ languages. The free plan includes 10 minutes of video a month. Starter is $18 a month billed annually or $29 monthly and adds AI dubbing and downloads (Synthesia pricing).

Video and podcast editing: Descript

Descript lets you edit audio and video by editing the transcript. Underlord (its AI co-editor), Studio Sound and filler-word removal are on every plan, with limited use on Free. The free plan includes 60 media minutes a month, with watermarked 720p exports (Descript pricing).

Proofreading: Grammarly

Grammarly

Grammarly checks grammar, spelling and tone in your browser and apps. The free plan includes 100 AI prompts a month. Paid plans add unlimited personalized suggestions and more prompts; pricing varies by country (Grammarly plans).

Our product: Exemplary AI

Exemplary AI

Exemplary AI works on content you've already recorded. Upload a video or podcast to get a transcript in any of 99 languages. From it you can make subtitles and translations, short vertical AI clips with animated captions, audiograms, and written drafts with the AI writer: titles, descriptions, summaries and blog posts. You download clips as MP4 files and post them yourself. There is a free plan; see pricing.

Where the others are better: a general assistant like ChatGPT or Claude is more flexible for writing from scratch. Canva is the better design tool, and ElevenLabs and Synthesia make voice and avatar content that Exemplary AI doesn't.

What changed since the 2024 version

  • Writesonic now focuses on AI search visibility tracking (monitoring how brands appear in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews), and its plans start at $79 a month billed annually (Writesonic pricing). We removed it from this list of creator tools.
  • Podcastle's website (podcastle.ai) now redirects to async.com, so we removed it until the product settles.
  • DALL-E was removed as a separate entry. For images, we now point to the generation built into ChatGPT and Gemini, or to Midjourney.
  • Paraphrasing and paragraph-generator sites were removed. A general assistant does the same job.

FAQ

What is the best AI tool for content creators?

There isn't one best tool. Most creators combine a general assistant (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini) for writing with one tool for their main format: Canva for graphics, Descript for video and podcast editing, or a repurposing tool for turning long recordings into clips.

Which AI content tools are free?

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Canva, ElevenLabs, Synthesia, Descript and Grammarly all have free plans, each with usage limits. ElevenLabs' free plan doesn't include a commercial license, so check the license before you publish anything commercially.

Can AI replace content creators?

No. AI tools speed up drafting, editing and formatting, but the ideas, the on-camera presence and the judgment about what your audience wants still come from you. Review everything an AI tool produces before you publish it.

What is the best AI writer for SEO content?

Use a general assistant (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini) to draft, then edit for accuracy, first-hand detail and sources. If your posts start from videos or podcasts, a transcript-based writer keeps the draft grounded in what was actually said.

One upload. Every format you need.

Drop in a recording and work from the transcript — clips, captions, chapters, show notes and posts all come from the same file.
